During September PT patrols from Rendova were extended so they were covering all of the Vella Lavella coast and portions of the Choiseul coast, 150 miles from the Rendova base. On the morning of September 15, a sweep of coves in the northern section of Vella Lavella meeting no opposition Lt.Cmdr. Le Roy Taylor, on Ens. W. Mills 181, led PT 178 (Lt.Jg. G.C.Miller and PT 170 (Lt.Jg.}Maul into six coves and inlets strafing shore installations. In Susulantolo Bay the boats discovered a barge filled with drums of rice, which they poured gasoline on and set afire. In Warambarai Bay they found a camouflaged barge, which ignited immediately when they fired upon it.
A second section of boats, led by Lt. Leonard R. Hardy in PT 176 (Ens.W.E. Powell) with PT 175 (Ens.R.L. Balch) set three barges afire in Marisi Bay and destroyed two small boats in Karaka Bay.
During this time the PT's had action with 28 barges destroying 9 and damaging 10. PT reconnaissance missions landing Marine scouting parties on Santa Isabel and Choiseul Islands and shot down two strafing float planes.
On 2 November a base was set up on Cape Torokina under Comdr. Henry Farrow with 8 PT's and survived mostly unscathed 600 bombings over the next 33 night attacks. On the afternoon of November 29, Lt.Cmdr. Le Roy Taylor, took PT 187 and two LCI gunboats to cover the evacuation of 700 trapped Marines a few miles south of Cape Torokina. In December both the Torokina and Treasury PT's extended their barge hunting activities . The Torokina boats covered the western coast of Bougainville and the Treasury boats from the southwest coast to the eastern coast of Bougainville, during which time they destroyed 6 barges and damaged 11, 3 planes shot down and 2 planes damaged
Next was Green Island , a circular atoll north of Bougainville, where Lt.Cmdr. Taylor and Lt.Leonard R. Hardy took PT 176 (Ens. W.E.Powell), PT 184 (Ens.E.C. Myers) The 176 and 184 arrived at Green at 2230 , entered the southern channel, took soundings and departed at 0015, knowing that there was 15 feet of water. The actual reconnaisance landing of forces on January 30/31 was protected by the same boats , with the same command structure.
In order to reach these areas more easily, and to give the boats more patrol time on station, Lt.Cmdr. LeRoy Taylor moved Ron 11 into Lambu Lambu Cove on the N.E. coast of Vella Lavella on September 25, with 7 PT's and one APc, and established an advanced operating base.
In March Squadron 11 and the tender Mobjack moved into Homestead Lagoon, on the west end of Emirau and commenced patrolls to ''contain'' the Japs in their sealed off areas, disrupting barge traffic and strafing coastal installations
